A Legendary Ride Born Out of Necessity

In 1977, cycling from Newark to New Hope, PA started with the original club L&M Tourers which was founded by 3 African American Sisters; Lucille, Mildred and Annette Smith.  Since their club was based in New York, the club rides were primarily limited to riding in NYC until deciding to explore new roads outside of NYC. The first destination outside of NYC was New Hope, PA because it allowed the cyclists to take advantage of completing a century while enjoying the views of the farmlands as they pedaled along the winding quiet back roads of New Jersey.

The ride was, and still is, a favorite for many since the roads in New Jersey offer a different riding experience. The ride to New Hope, PA was an opportunity for the growing number of black cyclists to come together en masse and ride in solidarity for the sport they have grown to love. As the years went on, L&M Tourers eventually split into two separate clubs; Major Taylor Cycling Club of New Jersey (MTCCNJ) and Major Taylor Iron Riders (MTIR) who continued the tradition of the New Hope Ride, which has become a more culturally diverse event, throughout the years.

What started as a destination ride one year, now continues on as an annual tradition every August. We hope this year is the year you join us, as we host another successful event.
